Eligibility for Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who meet specific criteria. Generally, you may be eligible if you:
- Are 65 years or older
- Have a qualifying disability
- Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Age 65 and Older
If you are 65 or older, you can sign up for Medicare. Most people qualify for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) without paying a premium because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. However, you may need to pay a premium for Part B (medical insurance).
Disability and Medicare Eligibility
Individuals under 65 may also be eligible for Medicare if they have been receiving disability benefits for at least 24 months. If you have ALS, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare the month your disability benefits begin.
Paid Medicare Taxes
To qualify for premium-free Part A coverage, you or your spouse must have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters). If you haven’t met this requirement, you can still get Part A, but you will need to pay a monthly premium.
Still Working at Age 65?
If you are still working at age 65 and have health insurance through your employer, you may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare without facing a penalty. You can sign up during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when your employment ends or your employer-provided health insurance coverage ends.
Medicare Part A, B, C, and D
Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering specific services:
- Part A: Hospital insurance
- Part B: Medical insurance
- Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans (offered by private companies)
- Part D: Prescription drug coverage
Medicare Enrollment Periods
There are specific times when you can sign up for Medicare:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Begins 3 months before you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after your 65th birthday.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available if you delay enrolling because of employer coverage.
- General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1 to March 31 each year if you missed the IEP or SEP.
Penalties for Late Enrollment
If you don’t sign up for Medicare when you’re first eligible, you may face late enrollment penalties. For example, if you delay enrolling in Part B, you may have to pay a penalty for as long as you have Medicare.
